Tips to Keep Stress Levels Low
For most of us, this is the first time we’ve ever had to deal with a pandemic. Naturally, this is a stressful time. High amounts of stress can impair immune system functioning and make us more susceptible to contracting an illness.
1) Enjoy the extra time with your family and reach out to friends and family members by phone or video chat.
2) Spend time in nature, while maintaining a social-distance 6 feet or more. The sights, smells, and sounds of nature help to calm our nervous system.
3) Accept that life, for the time being, has been disrupted. Figure out what you can do and what your limitations are.
4) Limit social media use and don’t use it as your news source. Be informed but avoid too much news.
5) Start or finish a new home project. Take up a new hobby. Find an online class to take.
6) Make sure you’re prepared to isolate yourself for up to 2 weeks.
7) Eat healthily, get enough sleep, limit substance use, and maintain a schedule where possible.
8) Take the precautions the experts are recommending. Having a plan in place for cleaning and everyday activities can lessen the feeling of helplessness.
9) If you have the ability, offer to help your neighbors or others in your community. Maintaining connectedness (while using social distancing) and supporting others also lessens the feeling of helplessness.

The opposite of mindfulness is going on autopilot, paying loose attention to what task or thing you are presently doing. Multitasking can only be so helpful and in some cases harmful. Never in the history of humans have we ever had access to so much information. We carry supercomputers (smartphones) in our pockets, after all. That our attention gets scattered is an understatement.
Mindfulness is an ancient practice that seeks to deepen one’s awareness of the inner workings of the mind to create a healthy separation of the mind’s fluctuations from how we experience life. All of us are subject to experiencing life through the filter of our minds, which means that whatever way our minds choose to interpret, analyze, or judge this is how we interpret, analyze, and judge our lives.
